One of the most iconic landmarks of Louisiana’s rich culture, Mardi Gras is a fortnight-long celebration which has been observed since the 16th century. It is a festive period marking the last day before Lent in the Christian calendar, traditionally filled with parades, music, and indulgent foods.
Avenues Recovery Center first conceived of their Sober Safe Spot in order to provide a safe, supportive, and substance-free space for people in recovery who wish to attend the Mardi Gras parades. After a warm reception in 2022, they brought the spot back again and again to serve the needs of the recovery community throughout carnival season.
The Louisiana Culture Festival was a two-day festival held in the French Market of New Orleans, as a prelude to the historic arrival of the Super Bowl LIX to Caesars Superdome. Featuring crafts, music, local cuisine, entertainment, and more, the festival was a proud display of the vibrant Cajun Culture which Louisiana is home to.
Avenues Recovery Center’s Louisiana facilities erected their signature Sober Safe Spot to provide education and resources and spread awareness about substance use disorder to passerby at this event. With free swag and educational handouts as well as live art therapy sessions, the spot was a source of education and inspiration throughout the event!

Thunder Over Louisville is the thrilling annual kickoff to the famed Kentucky Derby, featuring an air show by day as well as a dazzling fireworks display at night. The event typically takes place in mid-April along the Ohio River waterfront, attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators. Avenues Recovery Center’s Indiana facilities brought Sober Safe Spot to this event to make it accessible to the recovery community, offering a day of music, games, refreshments, and sober fellowship for all!
Making your own Super Bowl watch party? Do it the sober way! Avenues provided cute Super Bowl cutouts to boost the vibe and remind participants that Sober Bowl is so much better😊 (Pictured are clients of Avenues Recovery Center’s New Hampshire facilities!)
The Bayou Boogaloo is an annual three-day music and arts festival held along the banks of Bayou St. John in New Orleans, celebrating the unique nature, music, and culture of Louisiana. In addition to music, the family-friendly festival showcases local artists and craftspeople in its art market and provides a variety of food options from local vendors.
Avenues Recovery Center’s Louisiana facilities brought Sober Safe Spot to this wonderful cultural event so that all those in recovery could join and revel in the festivities too – in a safe, sober, and supportive space. With swag, music, refreshments, and activities, it was the greatest proof that life in recovery is not dry or dull – it’s full of fun and good times!
The Irish Italian Parade in Louisiana is an annual event which celebrates the rich cultural heritages of the Irish and Italian communities in the region. These parades feature decorated floats, marching bands, and participants distributing traditional items to the crowd. A unique custom is the throwing of vegetables such as cabbages, potatoes, and onions to bystanders—ingredients symbolic of Irish and Italian culinary traditions.
Avenues Recovery Center’s Louisiana facilities once again led the way for the recovery community, establishing Sober Safe Spot to create a safe and substance-free zone at this event. Their white tent and flag marked a haven of sober support and real fun for all those in recovery.
